ChinaMed Project Head of Research Andrea Ghiselli was one of the speakers at the second instalment of the CHERN China–Russia Talks series, a set of public roundtables exploring how the Russia–China partnership is evolving across different regions of the world.

The roundtable, titled “Russia–China Dynamics in the Middle East,” took place on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, from 14:30 to 15:45 (Brussels time).

Chaired by Tim Rühlig (EUISS; CHERN), the discussion also featured Alexander Gabuev (Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center) and Galia Lavi (Israel-China Policy Center, INSS, Tel Aviv University).

The roundtable examined the evolving dynamics of Russia and China’s engagement in the Middle East and asked what these developments reveal about the broader Moscow–Beijing relationship. Are Russia and China coordinating their approaches to the region, or are they largely pursuing independent—and at times divergent—interests? How do energy ties, arms transfers, and diplomatic positioning at the UN and elsewhere reflect the wider asymmetries within their partnership?

The discussion also explored how regional actors—including Gulf monarchies, Israel, and Iran—are adjusting their strategies as they navigate relations with Washington, Moscow, and Beijing, and what lessons Europe should draw from these developments for its own policy approach.
